Boston College Eagles at the US U20 Camp

with 3 comments

Boston College had four incoming freshmen taking part in the US camp. Philip Samuelsson (previous gallery)  and Patrick Wey took part in the opening three day – US-only portion of camp:

Chris Kreider and

Kenny Ryan survived the cut of 13 players to take part in the full camp.  BTW – if you are using the search function to look for particular images of the player Kenny Ryan add his birthdate (19910710) to the search as you’ll get many more images of Kenny Ryan the former BC student manager if you don’t.  Also I don’t know Boston politicians yet so this isn’t a personal endorsement (I’m in Chelsea), but manager Kenny Ryan would like you to vote for Tom Menino in the Boston mayoral election (see the 10 second mark of this news video).

The Hockey News’ latest “Hot List”

without comments

The Hockey News’ latest hot list “Beefing up Broadway” highlights 10 players currently in NHL training camps starting with Richard Panik (Tampa Bay Lightning):

At 2, they have Bobby Sanguinetti (New York Rangers):

At 3 is Nick Petrecki (San Jose Sharks – who, of course, should be at the top of the list as a former Boston College Eagle) – previous blog gallery.  At 4 – Mike Murphy who I have not had the chance to shoot, followed by former Michigan Wolverine Aaron Palushaj (St. Louis Blues) – previous blog gallery – and at 6 Simon Despres (Pittsburgh Penguins):

Coming it at 7 is Brandon Saad, the second of the three I haven’t shot, 8 is Tomas Kubalik (Columbus Blue Jackets) – previous blog gallery and at 9 is Kyle Clifford (Los Angeles Kings):

Rounding out the list is Alex Petrovic.

Next steps for the next generation

with one comment

There are times when it seems like there are more players on a roster with dads I’ve seen play professionally than without.  Here are three of those players who are taking the next step in their playing careers this season (alpha order or saving the best – BC – for last):

Ryan Bourque has “graduated” from the National Team Development Program and will be playing for the Quebec Remparts (de-committed from the University of New Hampshire)

Ryan Bourque is the brother of Chris Bourque currently in the Washington Capitals organization after a year at Boston University and the son of former NHL-er Ray Bourque.

David Musil joins the Vancouver Giants after playing in the Czech Republic.  A good bit of controversy over how Musil wound up with the Giants (major junior teams draft players and European players are handled differently than North American players).  Gregg Drinnan covered it here and here.

Musil’s father is former NHL-er Frantisek (Frank) Musil

and his uncle is former NHL-er Bobby Holik (those who know me as a former Devils STH are now amazed that I typed out his name properly rather than using the name I used at games, but there is a limit to my restraint):

Bobby Holik

The hockey lineage doesn’t stop there – Holik’s father and uncle, Jaroslav and Jiri, were stars in Czechoslovakia.  Behind the rubber chicken, you can see the book “Dynastie Holiku” by Jaroslav Kirchner which I picked up at CEZ Arena in Pardubice during the 2008 World Juniors (not sure if they have a bookstore in town, but if I understood correctly, they have a few tables of books and videos at all hockey games held there.  I also picked up a copy of Slovenske Hviezdy v NHL.

Philip Samuelsson is making the move from the USHL (Chicago Steel) to the Boston College Eagles.   Samuelsson played for Team Sweden during the Four Nations Cup last November, but as that was not an IIHF tournament, it did not bind him to Sweden.   In April, he played for Team USA in the IIHF Under 18 Championship.  (Note – a quick google shows there were some changes in the rules.  Not sure if they’d allow him to change again in the future or not.

Philip Samuelsson’s father Ulf Samuelsson is a former NHL-player and now is a coach with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Brad Thiessen, goalie journalist

with one comment

Nice to see that Brad Thiessen, former Northeastern University Husky, now member of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, has continued his blog which he started for a journalism class at Northeastern.  Definitely worth a read through the archives.

His last post mentioned that his roommate for the Penguins development camp was Eric Tangradi who I’ve shot in the past as a member of Team USA.  Tangradi has had to have a couple of surgeries on his hand since last season ended after connecting with a skate blade.  Hopefully his participation in the Pens camp is an indication that it is healing/rehabbing successfully.

CP Article on the success of the Swedes in the 2009 draft

without comments

Article discusses changes made in 2002 both structural and mental – “…Boustedt said it used to be acceptable for Swedish junior teams to finish in the top four in international competitions. “Now the only thing the players are going for is gold,” he said. …”

I’ve been lucky enough to be able to shoot a number of the drafted kids – click for a full list of 2009 National Hockey League-drafted players available in my archives.

I’ve included some of the Swedes in the gallery below:

Unrelated Pt. 1 – Is there a way to make a single-spaced list w/o bullets on Wordpress?

Unrelated Pt. 2 – The televised Sugarland concert from Lexington, Kentucky (in Boston on WCVB) was terrific, much better than Soundstage concert televised earlier this year on WGBX – both are staying on my DVR which is handy since I keep their cds in my car.  Apparently tonight’s concert is going to be for sale tomorrow, but only at Walmart :-(.  Maybe they’ll include their REM cover on their next regular album.

I still don’t understand using “Joey” for an audience singalong.  Am I totally misunderstanding the lyrics? The song sounds like her friend “Joey” was killed while drunk driving.  Am I wrong?   Of course, I don’t understand why people would be yelling out during “Stay” either.

Okay, while looking for a link for Sugarland’s website to use above – only found the “fan” membership site so grabbed the CMT artist link and discovered this:

I think I’m going to have to make an appropriate charitable donation to assuage my guilt over buying from Walmart.com – it not only has Love Shack, but several other covers, I even like the Beyonce cover judging by the mini-clip on Walmart’s website.  Thank God I’m a Presbyterian and therefore can sin (shop at Walmart) with zero need for confession or worry about going straight to hell :-).
